Its that time of year and we've (royal "we") been home almost all week with strep. 4 year olds with strep still have more energy than their folks so we came up with a variety of things to do and here's what we've done so far as sick child activities: Projects 1. Finished a mezuza: This was a basic wooden mezuza that had been painted pink, covered with g ...
Bath Salts for Lot
I was sure I posted about this 100 years ago but I couldn't find the post and I also can't seem to find a photo yet but a while back we made bath salts as a wedding gift. This is a great gift item to make with kids as its really simple to do. I thought of it this week as its a good tie in to the Parsha (Lot's wife.) I will try to update with a photo whe ...

Famine in Egypt another cool Brooklyn museum post
A few weeks ago I linked to a few posts from the Brooklyn museum about papyrus because of a parsha connection. This week there is another one. In Parshat Miketz there's the story of Pharoh's dreams and the seven year famine. The Brooklyn museum has a stela which talks of a seven year famine in Egypt. Although it seems that the stela is from a later perio ...
Update on Chayeii Sara craft
Wanted to give an update on the Rivka/Eliezer/camel paper craft from the previous post. This was actually a very successful project. So much so that my daughter did not want to go to gan so she could finish it, was waiting to leave gan and raced home from a chug she ordinarily refuses to leave, in order to finish this project. The hair and clothing w ...
Eliezer’s camels
In honor of the weekly Torah portion, Parshat Chayei Sara I'm linking to some paper toys to make to help create the story of Rivka and Eliezer and giving the camel's water. First a camel on The Toy Maker's site. This page has a camel and a giraffe and one could print it multiple times to make enough camels in the story. Next ...Parshat Lech Lecha trip to Egypt
I thought it would be neat to link to some posts from the Brooklyn museum about papyrus this week since in this week's parsha due to a famine Abraham and Sara end up in Egypt. Apparently there is very little written about the process of how Egyptians made Papyrus, and pictorial depictions don't really explain how the sheets were formed. The Brooklyn ...
No Noah but lots of animal crackers in the soup
Ok maybe not in the soup but we did also doanimal crackers. My nephew's bar mitzvah is this shabbat and the weeks parsha is Noach. Part of celebrating includes throwing candies (depending on the exact custom somewhere around the Bar Mitzvah boy's aliyah to the Torah) and a kiddush. I asked my sister-in-law whether she wanted me to look for animal candies, and she liked the idea, but of course I couldn't find any except gummy worms and gummy bears and it seemed to me that that wouldn't quite cut it. First I thought of doing a variation on animal cake pops (such as these cute lambs by Bakerella) using a non-dairy recipe and chocolate instead of candy melts because of the convenience factor. However, the weather where the Bar Mitzvah will be is hot! and all that chocolate likely would end up on nice white shabbat shirts and fancy dresses given the under 5 set tendency to wipe hands on their parents rather than on napkins.
Instead ...First Mitzvah book Tutorial
In honor of Parshat Yitro here is a tutorial of how to make a great Mitzvah baby book with photos of the different pages. I did not make it- it was made by one of the girls in my class. She wanted to make something for her new nephew and we came up with this idea. We looked at lots of different childrens books. She wanted to do something for now rather than when he was older. I suggested black on white since its easier for younger children to see, and I had been saving the plastics from wipes packages to use as the crinkle inside the baby book. ...Yetziat Mitzrayim, Exodus themes for Parshat Beshalach
I've always loved the themes related to the Exodus, in particular the splitting of the sea. I have a few works related to that. The first one is rather Moshe focused. Below are two more one is more people focused and the last one is Miriam and the women focused. ...
