Mitzvah cards
I came up with this idea a long time ago, but I never got around to posting about it. I thought it was appropriate around Shavuot given the Matan Torah connection. The idea here was to make Mitzvah cards for my daughter based on mitzvot she already does and can recognize. I took pictures that we already had that depicted a variety of mitzvot and used t ...

Szyk Haggadah- an interview with Professor Shalom Sabar
Background on the Szyk Haggadah
The current holiday season has given me a great opportunity to talk about the new edition of The Szyk Haggadah. Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) originally published his haggadah, a richly illuminated edition in gouache and watercolor, in 1940. It was printed in an edition of 250 and signed by Arthur Szyk and the historian, Cecil Roth. Roth also provided an introduction and commentary. Subsequently the haggadah was reprinted in less expensive editions in Israel, and could be found in many Jewish homes throughout the world.New Edition
Recently, Historicana, under the direction of Irvin Ungar, created a new edition of the haggadah with permission from the collector who owns the original Haggadah artwork and Arthur Szyk's daughter, Alexandra Szyk Bracie. This version of the Haggadah uses current technology for extremely vivid illustration photos, and includes a new translation and commentary by Byron L. Sherwin, and a companion volume, Freedom Illuminated: Understanding The Szyk Haggadah. I had the privilege of speaking with Professor Shalom Sabar, from the Jewish Folklore and Art History faculties at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, who is one of the contributors to the companion volume, and in interviewing him, by email....

More for Tu B’shvat- Dried Fruit Trees
Here is a little project I did with my daughter, dried fruit trees. Its extremely easy and has all the right Tu B'shvat elements in terms of dried fruit, flowers or trees. It is a quick yet fun project. Basically you take dried fruit (we used papaya), pretzels, and flower or circle shaped cookie cutters. Depicted are flowers but in truth, they do look a ...
Areyvut Bnai Mitzvah Video Contest
I like the idea of the Areyvut Bnai Mitzvah Video Essay contest and thought it would be relevant to some of the blog readers. I like the idea of turning family celebrations into meaningful experiences which give back to the community. A while back I requested readers to let us know how they made their family celebrations meaningful. I felt that it would ...
Welcoming Guests Parshat Vayera
Abraham and the angels mug by BC Annex For this week's parsha I thought I would post something I made a while back. I originally called it Abraham and the three angels, but the truth is you don't see Abraham or Sarah, but only the three angels. Its sort of in a werkstatte style, turn of the last century. I originally made it as an 8x10 print, but her ...
