It is officially the Jewish month of Kislev, and that means Chanukkah is coming. I will post a post about craft ideas but in the meantime, I wanted to post about a new item I added to the Birkat Chaverim shop- a Chanukkah lighting accordion book. I designed this a few years ago and assembled about 20-30 for a company to use as a promotional item (tho ...
Welcoming Guests Parshat Vayera
Abraham and the angels mug by BC Annex For this week's parsha I thought I would post something I made a while back. I originally called it Abraham and the three angels, but the truth is you don't see Abraham or Sarah, but only the three angels. Its sort of in a werkstatte style, turn of the last century. I originally made it as an 8x10 print, but her ...
Shana tova hand towel
Just wanted to post a recent project done for Ohev Sholom-The National Synagogue in Washington. Ohev Shalom is a great shul with a dynamic, innovative rabbi (disclosure- we are related, but I still think he does great stuff!) and welcoming community. I am always impressed with the types of programs the shul runs, the outreach in the community, and the i ...
If I Forget thee Jerusalem- Nostalgic Iconography of Jerusalem
Given that the 9th of Av is around the corner, I wanted to write about a Jerusalem topic again. In this case nostalgic iconography of Jerusalem. I’m going to draw on something I researched for a paper I wrote for my MA. The topic was depictions of Jerusalem in wedding invitations. At the time I looked at about 1000 wedding invitations in public and priv ...
Fast of Tamuz Jerusalem theme
The Hebrew date today is the 17th of Tamuz, a fast day which marks the traditional period of mourning for the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem (for more information see the OU's resources about the three weeks. To commemorate this, I am including two images I created for a non-profit organization in New York. They wanted to design a tile as ...
From Invitation to Birkon
I wanted to use a recent order to talk about the process of developing invitations and birkonim. For an upcoming wedding in August I sat down with the bride and we spoke about her style, her hatan's style and I asked if she knew what she would like. This is usually the hard part, as many people do NOT know what they want. Often they have an idea of what ...
One more card sample
Here's another sample thank you card. Again, these can be repurposed into invitations, bencher covers etc. I like the repeating circles in happy colors. If I added English to this too, I would either do something similar on a circle lower down in the design, or perhaps as a continuation of the Hebrew design.
Cards
On a totally different topic, I wanted to post some things which are not on the website at all. These are based on cards (thank you cards, post cards, simchat bat cards) done for commissions. These could be used for invitations or for bencher covers. At least something similar could be done for a bencher cover since these lie horizontally rather th ...
Ketubbot sizes
For those of you who were wondering, although the Ketubbot are listed at 16x20", other sizes are also available. Feel free to ask, and I will try to accommodate you. In addition, your ketubbah can have a white border or no border at all, and you may also commission a new Ketubbah. I'm happy to discuss new Ketubbah options. If you order color birko ...
Responding to searches
I have been noticing many hits to our site for the terms "Yonah" and "Ateret Zekeinim." Although the searchers are not specifically searching for my Yonah or Ateret Zekeinim, I thought i would highlight what these searches are seeing. Yonah/Jonah is, of course, referring to the story of Jonah and the Big Fish. I always liked bright colors, pattern an ...
