This year Israel is celebrating 70 years as a country. In honor of Israel’s 70th birthday I would like to share a variety of cacti projects, really sabra projects and party ideas. In general, cacti are a popular icon in Israel, particularly the fruit of the Opuntia ficus-indica, or sabra fruit. Israelis are often compared to the fruit, because the fruit are prickly on the outside and soft on the inside. Israelis tend to be like that as well. Here is what the fruit looks like:
My son came home with a sabra project made out of plasticine and cardboard for Yom Haatzmaut this year:
A more detailed view:
It has a lot of effort and thought put into it, and I personally love the colors, I am lately into turquoise. His art teacher explained the fruit/Israeli connection.
Here are some of the other students interpretations of sabras:
Note that some of the students added flags. Most have sabra fruits or flowers.
This year I have been noticing that cacti are in general a popular party theme and I have been saving cacti related pins to the Birkat Chaverim Yom Haatzmaut board. These include craft ideas, cookies, party decorations and more. To share a few of those links here:

Head over to our Yom Haatzmaut board to see many more cacti ideas. I would love to see what you do, if you use any of them.
I am toying with the idea of making sabra covers and cupcake wrappers. What do you think?
If you are looking for other Yom Haatzmaut projects and party ideas, we have others on the Birkat Chaverim site. For instance, these Blue and White cornettos would be fun for a party.
