I found it at <em>Shavua hasefer<\/em> (book week) this past year and immediately bought two copies and showed it to my class (doll clothing) for inspiration.\u00a0 The book is called <em>BiRechov Yirmiyahu<\/em> or Jeremiah Street and is written by Libi Daon and illustrated by Lena Guberman.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Overview<\/h2>\n<p>The story is about the Haruvi family, who\u00a0 live on Jeramiah street in Tel Aviv, and have great difficulties with loud sounds. They have managed to pressure their neighbours into conforming to their sound needs. When the municipality begins building a new park across from their apartment, the family begins to stage protests until they realize that parks and neighbourhood interactions are actually good things. (In the image below, Mrs. Haruvi is requiring Dani Mitz to only deal with soft, non-noisy fruits during siesta time.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-613\" title=\"Mrs. Haruvi and Dani Mitz, copyright Lena Guberman\" src=\"https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov2.jpg\" alt=\"rechov2\" width=\"475\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov2.jpg 475w, https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov2-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/>The illustrator, Lena Guberman, a winner of the Israel Museum prize for children&#8217;s book illustrations, has done amazing things in illustrating the book, with fabric. Small scraps, thread and a bit of shading become intricate detailed images of life on Jeramiah street. The three actual Jeramiah street personalities (Dani Mitz, Ezra Chashmal and Tamir HaSapar) look like the originals including details of age and physiques. In addition, there are details which make jeans look like jeans, figures have dimension and even make objects appear to be moving.<\/p>\n<p>There are also details which follow from page to page, which is not so easy to do when using scraps of fabric and changing the size of characters from page to page. If you glance at the photos in this post, you will notice that characters do manage to wear the same clothing from page to page.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-615\" title=\"Tamir HaSapar\" src=\"https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov4.jpg\" alt=\"Tamir HaSapar\" width=\"475\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov4.jpg 475w, https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov4-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/>In the page where Tamir Hasapar (barber) is blow drying a woman&#8217;s hair (immediately above), her hair actually seems to move. Dani Mitz&#8217;s juice stand feels like a juice stand and his cutting board has stitched cuts in it. The folds in Ezra Hashmal&#8217;s (Electricity) pants are in the appropriate places when he is sitting and riding his bicycle. The layering and detail are really sumptuous and the photographs really do make you feel as if the finished product is somewhat three dimensional. You really want to touch it and get inside of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-614\" title=\"Ezra Hashmal\" src=\"https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov3.jpg\" alt=\"Ezra Hashmal\" width=\"475\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov3.jpg 475w, https:\/\/birkatchaverim.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/rechov3-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/>If one were into home schooling things, this book would be great for talking about themes of neighbourliness, quiet\/loud and would be great fun as an excuse to make stitched pictures.<\/p>\n<h2>To buy BiRechov Yirmiyahu in Israel:<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.booknetshop.co.il\/prodtxt.asp?id=46124&amp;perur=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">booknet <\/a><br \/>\nOutside of Israel, I think the best thing is to write to the publisher on their <a title=\"book publisher\" href=\"http:\/\/kinbooks.co.il \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> to see who carries it outside of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to thank Lena Guberman who has very generously provided photos of her work.
