Travel safety with young children or keeping in contact

Sorry posts have been sparse around here. Its been extremely busy!

Given the time of year I thought I would write about one concern when traveling with families. A major concern is what happens if your child gets separated. If the child becomes separated, you want to make sure that the child can get in touch with you and that they know what to do. Older children can memorize or carry your cellphone number and can manage to call you. For younger children there are a few other possibilities.

When my nieces took my daughter to the zoo when she was about 2,  we took an elastic, wrote one of the girls cell phone numbers on the elastic and explained to her that if she could not find her cousins, she should stay exactly where she was, and tell a mom to call the number on her ankle. We updated this technique over the course of the summer to a colorful wristband made by Stuck On You, that she and other of her cousins liked to wear because they were fairly colorful. The one problem i had with these was that the information did not always stay clear, especially when we were doing heavy hiking or water activities.

After the trip I noticed another possible method of child safety. Bulldog temporary tattoos which you sort of write the phone number on. I suppose you could just write the phone number on the child, but this provides an area for people to see the information.

A variation to this is safety temporary tattoos like those made by safetytat. You could also make your own with temporary tattoo paper which prints on inkjet and laser printers. There are a bunch of companies that sell this and in fact you can see a tutorial at infarrantly creative on how to do so and also custom cut them with a silhouette machine  (unfortunately I don’t have one of these but hopefully you do!)
