August 9th, 2010 — 3:59pm

Desk containerAs school is approaching here are some related projects. Above is a desk organizer made out of plastic bags and clear tape. It was made by a student in my chug/class. Also useful for school are notebooks. Another participant made this notebook cover: Continue reading »

Water and another bag

July 26th, 2010 — 3:16pm

Plastic bag water scene

Summer is a good time to post these two projects made by two girls in my class. First is a water scene made out of plastic bags and fimo. I thought it was really neat. She tested what happens when you iron plastic bags a little too long and then made use of the piece as the ocean. She didn’t have to. You can actually iron other pieces together but she liked the effect. The fimo was shaped using a mold I bought that made sea animal shapes. Continue reading »

Zipper pouch

July 19th, 2010 — 3:09pm

zipper pouchHere’s a project made by one of the girls (age 12) in my chug. It was made several months ago out of recycled fabric. I have no idea where the beige came from but the lining is a tshirt. She cut the zipper down to size and thought out how she wanted to sew it since she wanted a lining. It came out rather nicely. Useful for storing tissues and money and such. She wanted to make something like this and we looked at a few possible ideas before she chose to do it this way. There was no pattern involved.

Matchbox building game

June 27th, 2010 — 12:11am

Matchbox keychain building game One of the girls in the chug (class) brought in slices of a cereal box to use as game pieces for her game. I liked that idea and used it with my daughter to make a travel game for my older niece who is a camp counsellor this summer. It had to be something that would a.fit in a matchbox and b.easy enough for a three year old to contribute. I remembered the beautiful slotted building discs by Joel Henririques and thought that would be perfect for what we wanted to do, although in a modified simple fashion. Continue reading »

Masks

February 25th, 2010 — 9:43pm

This week in our chug we made masks. We decided to use foam for that and really they decided what they wanted to do, I just gave some suggestions. My glasses were used as a pattern for the eyes and nose and shapes were pretty much determined by the girls. I can only show you one of the masks made, because I took pictures of the girls in the masks. I thought it would be ok at the time, but I don’t feel comfortable posting those pictures as they aren’t unknown enough.

Some other mask ideas that we could have done or you could do

First Mitzvah book Tutorial

February 5th, 2010 — 4:51pm

In honor of Parshat Yitro here is a tutorial of how to make a great Mitzvah baby book with photos of the different pages. I did not make it- it was made by one of the girls in my class. She wanted to make something for her new nephew and we came up with this idea. We looked at lots of different childrens books. She wanted to do something for now rather than when he was older. I suggested black on white since its easier for younger children to see, and I had been saving the plastics from wipes packages to use as the crinkle inside the baby book. Continue reading »

Awash in flowers

January 28th, 2010 — 12:14pm

My chug is bursting with flowers these days, just in time for Tu B’shvat. The top one is a circle which the creator stitched around and then pulled to make it puffy. You can sort of see where the thread is pulled. She used felt as the center of the flower and attached it to a headband. Apparently it was extremely popular amongst her classmates but not so much with a teacher who felt it would be more appropriate for Shabbat then in conjunction with the school uniform.

Here’s a few more: Continue reading »

Scarves and a few other updates

December 23rd, 2009 — 1:20pm

Felt scarf pink and purpleI know the title starts with Scarves, and I’m including one photo of a scarf at the top, but I am going to start with the updates. Now that Chanukkah/Hanukkah is over we can get back to other topics. I have been working on a variety of graphic design projects but most are identity related and I’m not going to post any at this time.

Doll clothing chug update

December 11th, 2009 — 12:50pm

buildabear outfits1

Although I have not posted recently about the chug (workshop/class), we are meeting again this year and are working on a variety of projects, mostly not doll clothing. Some participants are working on animal shaped ouch relievers (you know, those things that sit in the freezer and when you get an ouch, relieve the ouches) and others are working on scarves, some intended as Hanukkah presents. I’ll post photos when they are finished (assuming I remember to photograph them before they get taken home.)

Here are a few clothing items that the girls made in the meantime:
